After the hail: how to get your Regina roof replaced through insurance without the runaround

A July hailstorm can dent every shingle on a street in ten minutes. What happens next decides whether you get a proper roof or a patch job. We have walked hundreds of Regina homeowners through this, so here is the plain version.

Document first, call second

Take photos of the roof from the ground, of dented eavestroughs, downspouts and siding, and of any debris. Then call your insurer to open a claim. Do not sign anything with a roofer who knocks on your door that afternoon.

The adjuster meeting

Your insurer sends an adjuster to assess the damage. We recommend having your contractor on the roof with them. We meet adjusters every summer and know what they need to see and how they want the scope written. It keeps the claim complete the first time.

Read the scope

The adjuster's report lists what the insurer will pay for: shingles, underlayment, flashing, vents and sometimes siding and eavestrough. Check that ice-and-water shield, proper ventilation and code upgrades are included. If they are missing, a good contractor will write a supplement with photos.

Choose the roof, not just the roofer

• Ask for Class 4 impact-rated shingles. Many insurers offer a premium discount for them and the cost difference is small.
• Confirm ice-and-water shield at the eaves and in every valley.
• Make sure attic ventilation is checked and corrected while the roof is open.

Timing

After a big storm every roofer in the city is booked. A reputable contractor will give you a realistic date and hold it. Tarping is a temporary fix; a roof that leaks into November becomes a ceiling and insulation claim too.
